FT. PIERCE, Fla. — William R. Schermerhorn, 92, formerly of Rochelle, died Jan. 3, 2018 in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Bill was born on July 23, 1925 in Rochelle to Frank and Margaret (Boyden) Schermerhorn.
He attended school in Chicago and graduated from South Shore High School. Following graduation, he proudly served our country with the Army Air Corps.
Bill was a lifetime member of the Masons and served as past master of the local Horicon Lodge in Rochelle. He worked in the building trades most of his life and his last job in Rochelle was as Building Inspector for the city of Rochelle.
After his retirement from the city, he and his wife, Sharon, lived at Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin during the summer and at Lake Okeechobee, Fla., in the winter.  Hunting, fishing and woodcarving were his favorite pastimes.
Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sharon Schermerhorn; son, William (Mary) Schermerhorn Jr. of Monroe Center; two daughters, Sherry (Dan) Whitehead of Rock Falls, Wis., and Connie (Irv) Rolon of Rochelle; stepchildren, Michael Evans of Palatka, Fla., and Amy Evans of Rochelle; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
The memorial visitation will be from 12 – 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, with his son-in-law, Dan Whitehead, officiating. There will also be a masonic service at that time as well. Burial will follow at the Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle with military honors provided by the Eastern Lee-Ogle Honor Guard.
