FREEPORT — The Rochelle wrestling team edged out Freeport on the road Tuesday, winning 39-36 and improving to 16-3 overall.

The Pretzels took the lead when 138-pounder Tarrone Jackson pinned senior Wade Samp to start the dual match, but the Hubs received forfeits for Reese Kirk and sophomore Ethan Tooley in the 145 and 152-pound bouts to go ahead 12-6. Senior Zeke Horn followed with a second-period pin against Micah McIntosh in the 160-pound bout.

“I thought the kids wrestled really well,” head coach Alphonso Vruno said. “Freeport definitely has some good wrestlers, especially their upperclassmen. As we looked at our lineup, we knew it was going to be a close match, and there were a few kids that we needed to step up. We got some pins where we needed to… Overall, it was a quality win for the team.”

Freeport’s Keondre Jackson defeated 170-pounder Bryan Garza 8-2 and Matt Chavers followed with a fall over Noah Messer in the 182-pound bout. Ben Harvey and senior Gavin Ansteth locked down big pins for Rochelle, with Harvey beating Jahiem Brown in the 195-pound bout and Ansteth taking down Keegen Hodges in the 220-pound bout. Senior Zack Capes took a forfeit for the Hubs in the 285-pound bout.

Pretzel grappler Tyler Calam pinned 106-pounder Ivan Pineda in the first period before Freeport accepted forfeits in the 113 and 120-pound bouts. Sophomore Caleb Nadig kept Rochelle ahead in the match with a 7-5 decision over Jacob Redington in the 126-pound bout. Jaylon Hail earned a 9-4 decision against 132-pounder Grant Thompson in the final bout of the dual.
