ROCKFORD — The Rochelle varsity wrestling team placed eighth out of 12 high schools with 67 points at the Rockford East Giardini Invitational on Saturday, with three grapplers including sophomores Ben Harvey, Grant Thompson and junior Keegan Davis taking second place at their respective weight classes.
Thompson went 2-1 over three matches to place second at 126 pounds. Thompson won by 5-3 sudden victory over Metamora’s Owen Farquer before taking down Metamora’s Cade Ward by fall in the semifinals. Thompson lost by fall to Zion-Benton’s Mateo Villalobos in the finals.
Davis went 2-1 over three matches to finish second at 138 pounds. Davis won by 6-0 decision against Grant Baldridge before defeating Freeport’s Tarrone Jackson by 14-9 decision. Davis lost by fall to LaSalle-Peru’s Ashton Kellett in the finals.
Harvey finished 3-1 over four matches to take second place at 182 pounds. Harvey won by fall against Geneseo’ Will McKelvain and Zion-Benton’s Gerardo Zamudio before topping Kaneland’s Noah Butzman by 1-0 decision in the semifinals. Harvey lost by 6-2 decision against Freeport’s Major Dedmond in the championship bout.
Junior Zeke Horn placed fourth at 160 pounds. Horn won by fall against Kaneland’s Caleb Sanchez before losing by fall against Harvey’s Steve Collins and Metamora’s Connor Bernitt. Junior Bryan Garza (1-2) also took fourth place at 182 pounds, winning by fall over Metamora’s Gavin O’Brien before losing by fall against Freeport’s Major Dedmond and falling by 2-1 decision to Kaneland’s Noah Butzman.
Senior James Rodriguez and sophomore Ethan Albers also represented Rochelle on Saturday, with Albers earning one win by fall against LaSalle-Peru’s Nick Krolak.
