ROCHELLE — Staying true to his offense, Rochelle 145-pounder Caleb Nadig struck first and held off a high-level Class 1A opponent in Ethen Doty on Tuesday, when the Hub varsity team went head-to-head against the West Carroll Thunder in nonconference competition.

Undeterred by a scoreless first period, Nadig caught Doty midway through the second period, catching a free leg and finishing the first and only takedown of the match. In the down position, Nadig was unable to escape during the third period, but his defense prevented Doty from any potential turns, resulting in a 2-0 decision for Nadig. The matchup highlighted Rochelle’s 63-10 win over West Carroll, with the Hubs improving to 16-4 on the season.

“My approach was to be true to my offense and find my positions,” Nadig said. “There was some heavy hand fighting but I know that’s something I can do and I thought I wrestled a smart match. We’re wrestling really well, but we need to keep working hard and stay healthy.”

The Hubs received forfeits at five weight classes to open the match. Tommy Tourdot, Ivan Pineda, Josey Weber, Weldon Nay and Wesley Brown all took forfeits between 106 and 132 pounds, respectively. The Thunder scored their first points at 138 pounds, with Wyatt Doty totaling two takedowns and two near falls in a 12-4 major decision over Rochelle’s Grant Thompson. Nadig’s win against Ethen Doty at 145 pounds put the Hubs ahead 33-4.

Freshman Brock Metzger scored his first pin of the season at 152 pounds, defeating Nathan Stephens in the second period before Matt Eyster received a forfeit at 160 pounds. Trailing 45-4, West Carroll recorded its only pin of the evening at 170 pounds, with Kelden McCombie besting Rochelle’s Troy Papke in the first period. The final bout of the dual took place at 182 pounds, where Hub senior Ben Harvey notched two near falls and a pin over Bishop Groezinger.

After a double forfeit at 195 pounds, Noah Messer and Jaden Cook took forfeits at 220 and 285 pounds to conclude the dual. Rochelle will host Belvidere and Winnebago for Senior Day on Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m. The meet will be held outside on the RTHS football field.
