The Rochelle varsity wrestling team took the floor for three more dual matches before wrapping up the 2018 Don Flavin Championships at DeKalb High School on Saturday. After placing eighth in the Wayne Miller Bracket, the Hubs went 1-2 over three duals to take third in their pool and move their record to 6-15 overall.

DEKALB — The Rochelle varsity wrestling team took the floor for three more dual matches before wrapping up the 2018 Don Flavin Championships at DeKalb High School on Saturday. After placing eighth in the Wayne Miller Bracket, the Hubs went 1-2 over three duals to take third in their pool and move their record to 6-15 overall.

Rochelle faced Niles (Notre Dame) first on Saturday, losing by a score of 46-27. Niles received a forfeit at 120 pounds before Hub sophomore Grant Thompson defeated Jacob Gutierrez by 3-2 decision at 126.

Niles then won four straight matches from 132 to 152, with Sean Crump beating Rochelle junior Keegan Davis-Carter by 7-1 decision, Tim Bolger topping Hub freshman Ethan Tooley by 12-2 major decision, Jake Curtin pinning Rochelle freshman Osiris Lenker at 145 and Graeme Derr taking a forfeit. Junior Zeke Horn received a forfeit at 160 for the Hubs before Jackson Swinkle beat Hub junior Bryan Garza by 2-1 decision at 170.

Hub sophomore Ben Harvey pinned Sean Swinkle at 182, and junior Gavin Ansteth defeated Patrick Carr by fall at 195 before senior Pedro Lopez took a forfeit at 220. Gabe Fitzpatrick won by forfeit at 285 for Niles, and Alex Randell pinned Hub sophomore Ivan Pineda at 106 before Matthew Poniatowski won by forfeit at 113.

The Hubs wrestled Plainfield Central second, with Rochelle losing 44-34. Grant Thompson won his match by forfeit at 126 before Keegan Davis-Carter topped Mike Luevano by 14-4 major decision and Ethan Tooley pinned Enrique Sanchez at 138. Devonta Nelson defeated Osiris Lenker by 17-2 technical fall at 145, and Daniel Murray took a forfeit at 152 before Jamel Sheppard won by fall over Zeke Horn at 160.

Mattieu Arsenault pinned Bryan Garza at 170, but the Hubs responded when sophomore Ethan Albers pinned Zach Kornfeind at 182 and Ben Harvey took a forfeit at 195. Corvell Wallace won by 7-3 decision over Gavin Ansteth for Plainfield Central, and Rochelle bounced back with Pedro Lopez pinning Corey Perry at 285. Nathan Thongphadith won by fall over Ivan Pineda at 106 before Lucas Mena ad Gio Zamora took forfeits at 113 and 120 for Plainfield Central.

Rochelle’s lone victory at the Don Flavin Championships came when the Hubs edged Stagg 36-32 in their third dual on Saturday. Domenic Zaccone beat Keegan Davis-Carter by 19-2 technical fall at 132, but Ethan Tooley gave the Hubs a lead by pinning Jack Guinn at 138. Mustafa Rushdi won by injury default over Osiris Lenker at 145, and after both teams forfeited at 152, Kyle Berg slipped past Zeke Horn by 13-12 decision at 160.

Bryan Garza put Rochelle back on track with a pin over Arben Dardovski at 170, and sophomore Noah Messer took a forfeit at 182 before Ben Harvey wo by fall over Dan Green at 195. Tommy Doyle pinned Gavin Ansteth at 220 for Stagg, but Pedro Lopez took a forfeit at 285 for Rochelle. David Rubio won by fall over Ivan Pineda at 106 for Stagg.

Both teams forfeited at 113, and after Jacob Arana took a forfeit at 120 for the Hubs, Grant Thompson won by fall over Joe Dawson at 126 to seal the victory for Rochelle.
