ROCHELLE — There weren’t many bright spots for the Lady Hubs varsity basketball team Tuesday night, but junior Jacie Wyatt helped provide a glimmer of light in Rochelle’s 54-34 loss to the Morris Redskins.
Wyatt scored a team-high nine points for the Lady Hubs, who dropped to 10-14 overall and 3-9 in conference play with the loss. Rochelle is averaging just 34 points per game over its last three games, and head coach Tony Rowan is hoping Wyatt and the rest of the Lady Hubs can be more assertive offensively as the team’s regular season schedule winds down with three games to go.
“I think everybody needs to be a little more aggressive,” Rowan said. “Jacie sometimes doubts herself but she’s a phenomenal player and a great kid. The more aggressive she can be, the better it will be for us as a team.”
Morris (15-10, 5-5 NIB-12) build a 27-18 lead at halftime behind the efforts of junior Mya Shannon and senior Meghan Smith, who went on to combine for 33 Redskin points in the game. Shannon led the way with a team-high 21 points, while Smith added 12 points for the visiting team.
“They stayed extremely aggressive throughout the game and I think we were a little slow defensively,” Rowan said. “They got looks they wanted and they were very successful in taking them.”
Sophomore Abby Lundquist scored all seven of her points in the first half for Rochelle, but she exited the game in the second quarter with an apparent wrist injury. The Redskins outscored the Lady Hubs 14-4 in the third quarter with Lundquist on the bench, and Morris continued to control the game into the fourth quarter until both teams unloaded their benches.
Five Rochelle girls scored in the second half including seniors Kellee Parker and Caylee Turner, who teamed up for seven points. Senior Abby Kerns and junior Cesca Vardman each totaled two points, while junior Allysa Harding added one. The Lady Hubs will face Stillman Valley on the road Thursday night at 7 p.m.
