Pictured, several students from May School are winners in the Young Authors’ essay contest held yearly. The first place winners are Joshua Cruz, Frankie Pelan, Mark Green, and Addison Stewart. Second place winners are Nazeria Dean and Jasmine Taylor. The four students who achieved first place will attend the Young Authors’ Conference, which is held each year in May at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill.The event, sponsored by the Illinois Language and Literacy Council and the Illinois Reading Council, is designed as a celebration to honor exceptional writing by students in grades kindergarten through eight. The event provides an opportunity for young writer to meet published authors and to hear how the authors themselves create the characters and stories that have become their books.
