FREEPORT — Two Hub tennis players walked away with medals when the Rochelle boys battled with Freeport, Marengo, Jacobs and Rockford Lutheran at the Freeport Varsity Invitational this past Saturday.
Junior Noah Griffith improved his overall record this season to 18-1 by winning four matches en route to finishing first at No. 1 singles. Griffith cruised over Marengo junior Ethan Schmitt (6-1, 6-0) before overcoming a slow start to take down Freeport senior Nick Fritz (7-6(1), 6-3). Griffith then defeated Freeport’s Michael Heilman and Jacobs senior Brandon Jones by respective scores of 6-0, 6-0 to claim the singles title.
Finishing second at No. 2 singles was Rochelle junior Kevin Zheng, who started his day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marengo senior Kyan Punotai as well as a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Freeport’s Carter Shockey. Zheng easily defeated Freeport’s Jacob Flowers (6-0, 6-0), but he fell to Jacobs junior Luke Esswein in his final match (6-2, 4-6, 7-10).
Hub sophomores Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia placed fourth at No. 1 doubles, taking down Marengo seniors Carter Olson and Tristan Vance by a score of 6-1, 6-0 for their lone victory on the day. At No. 3 doubles, juniors Ozzy Fulgencio and Tyler Nalley finished fifth, with their closest match coming in a 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 loss to Marengo sophomores Jacob Vance and Anthony Gailloreto.
