Baseball: O'Rorke receives Interstate 8 First Team honors

Three members of the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team earned All-Conference recognition from the Interstate 8 this season. Senior Colton O’Rorke was named to the First Team, while seniors Garrett Gensler and Noah Lara each took home Honorable Mentions for the Hubs. Rochelle finished with a 10-19 overall record this season.

Softball: Smardo earns Interstate 8 First Team honors

Three members of the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team received All-Conference awards from the Interstate 8 this season. Senior Morgan Smardo was named to the First Team for the second time in three seasons, while junior Ella Alfano and sophomore Lauren Dyer each received Honorable Mentions. Rochelle finished with a 5-21 record this year.

Girls Basketball: Gehm hired as next head coach of Lady Hubs

Jon Gehm recognized many of the student-athletes who laced up at Rochelle Township High School on Monday morning, when the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity basketball team held its first summer skills camp workout of the offseason. That familiarity stems from Gehm’s experience at Rochelle Middle School, where he coached basketball for four years.

Softball: Confidence keys Lodico's sophomore success at Benedictine

Former Rochelle softball standout Bella Lodico had the tough task of taking the pitcher’s circle with the Benedictine University team trailing by nine runs during an NACC matchup against Marian University on April 2. What resulted was not only Lodico’s longest collegiate outing, but a remarkable come-from-behind win that highlighted her sophomore season with the Eagles.

Softball: Difficult schedule results in five-win season for Lady Hubs

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team was presented with a tough schedule during the 2023 season. With four of the eight schools in the Interstate 8 Conference exceeding 20 wins, victories were difficult for the Lady Hubs to obtain. As Rochelle continues to build for next season, head coach Deanna Jacobs said that shrinking the skill gap between the Lady Hubs and their opponents will be the biggest priority as the offseason officially begins.

Boys Tennis: Hub netters record historic 12-win season

Three tournament titles and a series of historic achievements highlighted the 2023 season for the Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team. With 14 seniors including five varsity starters graduating from the roster, head coach Kristy Eckardt and her staff will look to rebuild and identify new talent in order to continue the team’s recent trend of success next season.

Post-COVID success has been difficult to find for the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team, which finished the 2023 campaign with its third consecutive losing season. With a large senior class departing and a small number of players eligible to return, head coach Jarrod Reynolds said that pitching will be the program’s biggest priority over the offseason.

Experience in the back row was the building block of a seven-win season for the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team this spring. With a trio of starting defenders graduating from the 2023 roster, head coach Brad Male will look to returning players for continued growth.

Boys Track: Fresh-soph success creating optimism for Hubs

The Rochelle Hub track and field team saw most of its success at the fresh-soph level this season, where the program’s underclassmen turned in several strong showings during the indoor and outdoor portions of the season. Head coach Dale Bergeson and his staff will be looking to turn that success over to the varsity level, where Rochelle finished eighth in the Interstate 8 Conference Championships and 10th in the IHSA 2A Sectional at Genoa-Kingston.

Girls Track: Lady Hubs continuing to build for the future

With several freshman and sophomore athletes asked to compete at the varsity level for the Rochelle Lady Hub track and field team this season, head coach Alison Vrana saw plenty of growth from the start of the indoor season in March through the end of the outdoor season in late May. As Vrana transitions into a volunteer coaching role next season, the team will look to mold that growth into results as the program continues under new leadership.

Wrestling Club: Forge athletes tangle at 2023 Northern Plains Regional Championships

The Forge Wrestling Club competed in the 2023 Northern Plains Regional Freestyle & Greco-Roman Championships at the Woodside Wisconsin Dells Center from May 12-14. Three wrestlers brought home first-place finishes in the freestyle tournament and two more secured first-place finishes in the greco-roman wrestling event.

A historic season for the Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team concluded at the IHSA State Championship meet, where seniors David Wanner and Owen Haas represented the Hubs as Rochelle’s first state qualifiers in doubles since Charlie Duval and Brandon Jones in 2013.

Weightlifting: Harvey to continue competitive career at Northern Illinois University

Rochelle senior Anna Harvey’s passion for competitive weightlifting will remain with her as she begins her academic studies at Northern Illinois University next year. With guidance from her weightlifting coach Dr. Brandon Male, who teaches in the kinesiology department at NIU, Harvey will be the founding member of a new sport club called the Sled Dogs beginning this August.

Softball: Freeport ousts Rochelle in IHSA 3A Regional Semifinals

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team faced Freeport in the IHSA 3A Sycamore Regional Semifinals on Wednesday, falling 13-0 to finish the season with a 5-21 overall record as well as a 2-12 record in the Interstate 8 Conference. Senior Morgan Smardo went 2-for-2 with two singles as well as six strikeouts over four innings pitched in the loss.

The Rochelle Hub varsity track and field team concluded its season at the IHSA 2A Genoa-Kingston Sectional on Friday evening. Rochelle tied for 10th place out of 15 schools with 10 points and the team did not have any athletes qualify for the IHSA State Championships.

It’s been a full decade since Rochelle Township High School last saw a doubles tennis team advance to the IHSA State Championships on the boys side. Seniors David Wanner and Owen Haas looked to end that 10-year drought on their home courts Friday afternoon, when the Hub combo battled as the No. 6 doubles seed in the IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional.

    The Forge Wrestling Club sent a small number of athletes to the 2023 Illinois Second Chance National Team Qualifier at Sycamore High School this past weekend. St. Paul Lutheran School won the 5th & 6th Grade Boys Division with 73 points as well as the 7th & 8th Grade Boys Division with 62 points. Steward won the 5th & 6th Grade Girls Division with 60 points and Creston won the 7th & 8th Grade Girls Division with 60 points. Other competing schools included Kings, Eswood and Cornerstone.
