IHSA updates member schools on return to play

IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson released an update to member schools Tuesday evening detailing recent meetings with the IDPH regarding a return to athletic activities.

Cheerleading: Hardcastle forming lasting friendships

Zoe Hardcastle has been a cheerleader for nearly her whole life. Hardcastle was only 5 years old when she started attending cheerleading camps and participating in the Lil Rahs, Rochelle Township High School’s youth cheer program for girls from preschool through fifth grade.

Cross Country: Lenkaitis looking to lead Hub harriers

While Rochelle Township High School’s cross country program continues rebuilding its varsity lineup, there was tremendous success from the team’s freshman and sophomore harriers during the 2020 season. One of those runners was freshman Parker Lenkaitis, who immediately emerged as a varsity contributor in only his first high school season with the Hubs.

Football: Interstate 8 teams up with Kishwaukee River Conference

The Interstate 8 Conference and Kishwaukee River Conference will come together for the 2021-22 IHSA football season. The 14-school conglomerate will be split into two groups, each containing seven schools based on enrollment and geographical location.

Cheerleading: Tumbling highlights Hueramo's senior goals

Jumping and tumbling are the two areas Rochelle Township High School senior Giselle Hueramo wants to step up when the Lady Hub cheerleading team returns to action. Hueramo will be entering her fourth season with the RTHS cheer program, competing on the JV team over her freshman and sophomore years before joining the varsity team as a junior.

Dance: Crump feeling free on the floor

The freedom that Rochelle Township High School senior Makaila Crump feels while she moves on the dance floor is what has sparked her passion for the sport since she was 3 years old. With one final season with the Chellettes approaching, Crump’s goals are to continue growing and competing at a high level while also preparing to possibly dance at the collegiate level.

Boys Basketball: Riddell battling on the boards

Junior center Jason Riddell took on a reserve role with the Hub sophomore basketball team this past season, serving as the team’s seventh or eighth man and providing depth in the frontcourt. Motivated to have more of a purpose on the floor, Riddell is working to improve all facets of his game as he prepares to lace up for his first varsity season at Rochelle Township High School.

Cheerleading: Coglianese cherishing time with Lady Hubs

Lady Hub senior Mary Coglianese has made many memories throughout her eight years cheering for Hub football teams. From elementary school to high school, Coglianese hopes she’ll have one more chance to not only cheer alongside her friends, but showcase the talents she’s developed since she first put on her Rochelle Junior Tackle uniform in fourth grade.

Boys Basketball: Hasz ready to work for varsity role

Hub forward Cooper Hasz wasn’t satisfied with his performance on the hardwood during his sophomore basketball season this past winter. Hasz felt that he didn’t work hard enough, but with his first varsity season approaching, Hasz wants to do whatever he can to help his team.

Dance: Keilman finding her happy place

Dance has been more than a sport for Rochelle Township High School senior Kayla Keilman. Throughout nearly her whole life, dance has been a stress reliever and a form of creative expression and competition ever since visited the Just for Kix studio as a first-grader.

Cross Country: First-mile splits key Garcia's success

Since taking up cross country during her freshman year, Emily Garcia has made strides in starting strong during each race. Garcia will be working to finish even stronger as she reflects on her third season with the Lady Hubs and trains for her fourth and final season as a senior.

Boys Basketball: Gerber thrives in sixth-man role

Forrest Gerber shared the sixth-man role on the Rochelle Township High School sophomore basketball team this past season, using his defensive tenacity and ball-handling abilities to help the Hubs to a 24-5 record and an Interstate 8 Conference Championship. With his first varsity season on the horizon, Gerber said his 3-point shooting will be his biggest area of improvement.

Baseball: Meyers staying patient at the plate

Hub senior Evan Meyers has been a baseball player ever since he started running imaginary bases and hitting balls off the tee when he was 2 years old. The mental toughness needed to be successful in the sport has continued bringing Meyers back to the diamond over the years.

Cross Country: Forsberg setting high standard for senior season

Slashing four minutes off a personal-best time is no easy task for cross country runners. That’s what Hub harrier Peter Forsberg will attempt to achieve, however, after recently completing his second season with the Rochelle Township High School cross country program.

Softball: Ansteth aiming to improve hitting skills

Despite losing her most recent softball season to COVID-19, Rochelle senior Kendal Ansteth continued working hard over the summer to improve her skills on the diamond. Whether it was through competing with the Express Fastpitch travel program or practicing on her own, Ansteth will be ready to be a leader for the Lady Hub varsity team when action resumes this year.

Girls Basketball: Davis-Carter finding herself on the hardwood

When Lady Hub student-athlete Adriannah Davis-Carter was young, her family always had the sports channels on while she watched television. Her brothers were both heavily involved in sports, so she always wanted to take up a sport she could claim as her own and be great at.

Girls Basketball: Luxton ready to utilize superior height

Lady Hub basketball player Abby Luxton filled a dual role with the Rochelle Township High School sophomore and varsity teams this past season. Luxton used her height, length and skills to become a leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker at the sophomore level. The 6-foot-1 center will look to make a greater impact as a junior on the varsity team this coming season.

Girls Bowling: Summers settling in with Lady Hubs

Before Lady Hub bowler Carly Summers arrived at Rochelle Township High School, she attended Eswood School in Lindenwood, only a few miles outside the Hub City. It was there that she and her classmates, ranging from kindergarteners to seventh-graders, were treated with a trip to the Cherry Bowl in Rockford, which sparked her initial interest in the sport.

Wrestling: Accountability creates success for Weber

Accountability means everything for Josey Weber. Whether it’s through working out, attending practice, competing hard during meets or even maintaining strong grades outside the wrestling room, the Lady Hub sophomore grappler holds herself to a high standard of responsibility.
