Baseball: Rochelle blasts off against Freeport

Hub senior Noah Knight walked up to the plate with an opportunity to send the Rochelle varsity baseball team into the IHSA Class 3A Rochelle Regional Finals with one swing of his bat. With the wind at his back, Knight delivered a towering blast to left field, a three-run homer that sealed Rochelle’s 11-1 victory over the sixth-seeded Freeport Pretzels in the regional semifinals on Thursday.

Baseball: Hubs host LaSalle-Peru for Senior Night

The Rochelle varsity baseball team hosted Senior Night against LaSalle-Peru to close out both the regular season and conference play on Monday. The Cavaliers ralled from a 1-0 deficit to score seven unanswered runs and beat the Hubs by a final score of 7-1. Rochelle enters the postseason 15-8 overall and 6-6 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 West.

Rochelle senior Katherine Bakken avoided a potential wipeout to turn in a strong performance during the 3200-meter run finals at the IHSA Class 2A State Championships this past weekend. Junior Macey Ryan raced in the state championships for the third consecutive year this past weekend, participating as a first-timer in the 100-meter dash after running in relays over the previous two seasons.

Boys Track: DeLille breaks RTHS record at NIB-12 Championships

Rochelle senior Mason DeLille’s record-setting performance in the triple jump highlighted the varsity boys track and field team’s efforts during the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Championships on Friday. DeLille won the conference title with a mark of 44-7 ½ which clears the 2012 record of 44 feet set by Chris Williams. Rochelle’s varsity team took ninth place with 25 points, while the fresh-soph team finished ninth with eight points.

The Rochelle varsity softball team recognized five seniors for their contributions to the program before the Lady Hubs took the field against the Morris Redskins for their annual Senior Day game. Emilee Dueringer prides herself on leadership and being a positive role model inside the dugout for the Rochelle varsity softball team. When Dueringer completes her career with the Lady Hubs, the senior will be continuing her softball career at Kishwaukee College next year while studying radiology.

Katherine Bakken knew that The University of St. Francis was the school for her only moments after the Rochelle senior walked onto campus for the first time. When Bakken graduates Rochelle Township High School this spring, she’ll be taking both her track and field talents and her cross country talents to the Fighting Saints next year.

Senior Brandon Johnson pitched six innings and struck out eight batters.

    The Rochelle varsity girls soccer team played its final road game of the regular season this past Thursday. The Lady Hubs faced Sterling, with sophomore Ayah Sbeih scoring Rochelle’s lone goal in the team’s 6-1 loss against the Golden Warriors. Rochelle dropped to 2-12-12 on the season. Junior Viviana Belmonte totaled 10 saves for the Lady Hubs.

    The Rochelle varsity baseball team bounced back from its sweep by Sterling with a 7-2 road victory against Plano on Saturday. Senior Hayden Jones struck out 11 batters and allowing five hits in six innings on the pitcher’s mound.

    The Rochelle varsity baseball team needed only one victory to avoid losing the Northern Illinois Big 12 West title to the Sterling Golden Warriors this past week. But after falling in the first two games of the series, the Hubs suffered their third consecutive loss to Sterling this past Thursday, losing by a score of 7-1 to drop to 13-6 overall. The Golden Warriors clinched the NIB-12 West championship with the sweep.

    The Rochelle varsity boys tennis team saw its losing streak continue against Dixon this past Thursday. The Dukes defeated the Hubs by a score of 5-0 to drop Rochelle to 0-16 on the season. The Hubs won only six games during the match.
