SKOKIE — Rochelle Middle School students Zachary Smith and Mercy Hunley recently competed at the MathCounts state competition meet in Skokie.

Smith and Hunley competed as top-scoring individuals after the RMS team’s second place performance at won the local MathCounts competition hosted by the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and Sauk Valley Community College. The RMS mathletes are coached by Katie Queller-Zilis.

At the local Sauk Valley Community College event, Smith placed first individually and Hunley placed sixth.

“The Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) and Sauk Valley Community College invite all area schools to participate,” a press release said. “IPSE promotes the program to inspire excellence, confidence and curiosity in middle school students with a program the provides the kinds of experiences that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom. Once the students compete, we know the experience is meaningful and helped sharpen their problem-solving skills. Solving difficult math problems during preparation for and competing at the event encourages them to trust their problem-solving skills.”
