ROCHELLE — A breakout showing from the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team resulted in its best offensive output of the season as well as its most lopsided victory of the season Thursday evening, when the purple and white concluded the regular season against the Harvard Hornets.
Junior Ryan Senne went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, while junior lead-off batter Breydan Andrews went 3-for-4 with a double and a team-high four RBIs. The Hubs held a 3-0 lead before exploding for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to beat the Hornets 15-0. Junior Brandyn Metzger fired all four innings for Rochelle (7-20, 0-14 Interstate 8), striking out three batters while holding Harvard to four hits to record the win on the pitcher’s mound.
Andrews sparked Rochelle’s three-run surge in the bottom of the second inning, belting a two-run double into center field after senior Chandler Cunningham scored on a passed ball for the team’s first run of the evening. The Hubs collected seven hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, where Andrews and senior Brock Metzger each slapped RBI singles before Cunningham smacked a two-run double to left field. Rochelle finished with 11 total hits in the victory.
Rochelle will head to Sterling for the IHSA 3A Regional Quarterfinals on Monday evening. The ninth-seeded Hubs will play the seventh-seeded Sterling Golden Warriors at 4:30 p.m.
