MAPLE PARK — The Rochelle Hubs were held to one hit during the second game of their Interstate 8 Conference varsity baseball series against Kaneland on Wednesday evening.
Junior Brode Metzger singled in the top of the fifth inning for the Hubs, who scored one run in the top of the first inning but were unable to generate much offense in an 11-1 loss to the Knights. Rochelle (5-7, 0-5 Interstate 8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring after senior Carson Lewis drew a lead-off walk and Metzger reached on a hit-by-pitch in the next at-bat. Sophomore Brody Bruns drove Lewis home with a one-out sacrifice fly to center.
Kaneland (11-4, 3-1 Interstate 8) tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, where Brady Alstott reached on an error to score lead-off man Kanon Baxley. The Knights surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 5-1 lead after Nolan Claeson ripped a two-run single into left field and Alstott followed with a run-scoring single four batters later.
Preston Popovich launched a two-run single into right-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving the Knights a 7-1 lead. Baxley and Alstott combined to drive home three runners on two singles in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting Kaneland one run away from victory. The Knights clinched their win and the series victory with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, where an error in left field allowed No. 6 batter Thomas Thill to score after a one-out walk.
Lewis earned the start on the mound for the Hubs, throwing three innings before handing the ball to sophomore Andrew Huerta, who pitched one and one-third innings and struck out two batters with two walks. Senior Brandyn Metzger fired the final one and one-third innings for the Hubs, striking out one batter. Evan Ross earned the win for the Kaneland side, throwing all six innings and striking out four batters while walking four and limiting the Hub offense to one hit.
