ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team hosted a nonconference doubleheader against Streator on Saturday, splitting the two-game set with the Bulldogs.
Rochelle outlasted Streator for a 1-0 win in the morning before falling 6-0 in the afternoon to close out the set. The Hubs (3-4, 0-0 Interstate 8) will begin conference play against Sycamore at home on Monday.
Game 1
Freshman Brody Bruns turned in a stellar outing on the pitcher’s mound in the opener, throwing all seven innings while striking out seven batters and holding the Bulldogs to just three hits.
Rochelle scored its first and only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, where junior Carson Lewis delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded to bring home Bruns, who was one of four players to record singles in the frame.
Junior Elijah Harley and sophomore Brode Metzger each singled to keep the Rochelle offense moving in the frame. Junior Ethan Goodwin reached base three times in the victory, finishing with two singles and reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
Game 2
Streator took control early in the finale, scoring two runs on an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs followed with three runs in the top of the second inning, scoring on a two-run double and an RBI single to surge ahead 5-0.
Streator tallied its sixth and final run of the game after an RBI double from Noah Camp in the top of the sixth. Senior Brock Metzger led the Rochelle offense in the loss, reaching base three times on a hit-by-pitch as well as a double and a walk.
Sophomore Brode Metzger added a double for the Hubs, who were held to two hits and saw two players reach base on errors in the loss.
