MARENGO — An offensive outburst enabled the Rochelle Hubs to break a seven-game losing streak during their nonconference varsity baseball matchup at Marengo on Friday evening.
Senior Carson Lewis and sophomore Brody Bruns each recorded three hits for the Hubs, who exploded for 10 runs in the top of the second inning and withstood a late rally to score a 14-10 win over the Indians. Four players finished with two RBIs for the Hubs (7-15, 0-12 Interstate 8), who totaled 12 hits during their road victory against Marengo. Rochelle will resume conference play with a three-game series against Ottawa beginning on the road at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Senior Brandyn Metzger delivered an RBI single to right-center field in the top of the first inning, giving Rochelle a 1-0 lead before the Hubs blew the game open with their 10-run effort in the top of the second inning. Rochelle ripped five singles in the second inning, where both Bruns and Lewis collected run-scoring hits while sophomore Dylan Manning smacked a two-run hit into right field. Marengo recorded two runs on two extra-base hits in the bottom of the first inning.
The Indians faced an 11-2 deficit entering the bottom of the third inning, where Marengo rallied for three runs on two errors and three hits including RBI singles from Justin Oine and Alten Bergbreiter. Sophomore Johnny Andrist came through with an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning for the Hubs, slapping a single through the left side for his second RBI of the game.
Rochelle carried a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Indians capitalized on three errors and drew four walks to score five runs and bring the Hubs within two with one frame remaining. Drew Litchfield’s RBI double was the highlight of the sixth inning for the Indians, who couldn’t contain the Hub offense in the top of the seventh inning, as Rochelle answered with a two-run single from senior Ethan Goodwin, who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored in the game.
