Rochelle finishes 1-2 over three games after 95-93 loss to Johnsburg

PECATONICA — The Rochelle Hubs tipped off their tournament run at the Pecatonica MLK Invitational on Saturday, splitting a pair of games with Harlem and UIC College Prep. Rochelle faced Harlem in the opening round, falling 74-59 before taking down UIC Prep 76-59 in consolation play later that day. The Hubs concluded the tournament with a 95-93 loss against Johnsburg in the consolation championship on Monday.

Harlem

Sophomore forward Brody Bruns led the Hubs with 20 points and seven rebounds during their opening-round matchup against the Huskies on Saturday. Despite some struggles from the field, Bruns went a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line.  Freshman guard Cohen Haedt stepped up for the Hubs, scoring 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.

Senior guard Carson Lewis chipped in eight points for the Hubs, who shot under 35 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers in the loss to the Huskies, who shot just under 40 percent for the game. Rochelle held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding Harlem 36-30.  The Hubs scored 14 points in transition, but the Huskies poured in 22 points off turnovers.

UIC Prep

Rochelle controlled the second half of its game against UIC Prep, outscoring the Flames 45-33 to seal its first victory of the tournament. Sophomore forward Brody Bruns once again carried the torch for the Hubs, scoring a game-high 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting while posting 20 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end.  

Sophomore forward Warren Schweitzer emerged off the bench, using his 6-foot-6 frame to earn his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Brode Metzger added 10 points for the Hubs, who outrebounded the Flames 49-30 and held an 18-5 advantage in second-chance points. Senior guard Elijah Harley chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

Johnsburg

A dominant opening half wasn't enough for the Hubs, who led 49-31 at halftime before surrendering 35 fourth-quarter points during a 95-93 loss against the Skyhawks. Sophomore forward Brody Bruns led Rochelle  with 25 points and 14 rebounds, while freshman guard Cohen Haedt added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three assists. Rochelle (6-13, 1-3 Interstate 8) finished with five players in double figures.

Senior guard Elijah Harley totaled 15 points and six assists for the Hubs, who shot 53.7 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from 3-point range in the game. Sophomore guard Mason Ludwig scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting with eight rebounds, while junior guard Van Gerber finished with 12 points and eight assists. Rochelle pounded the paint against Johnsburg, outscoring the Skyhawks 48-26 in the painted area.
