DIXON — Senior guard Landan Martin felt that he was taking good shots throughout Rochelle’s five-game losing streak. Even when those shots weren’t falling, Martin continued to be aggressive, attacking the rim and firing from the perimeter when he had space.
Martin finally broke through against Dixon on Tuesday, when the senior went off for a team-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead the Hubs over the winless Dukes 65-55 and snap Rochelle’s losing streak. Martin went 3-for-4 from the 3-point line and 8-for-10 from the free-throw stripe during the victory.
“It felt really good to get a win,” Martin said. “We’ve been slumping lately and we haven’t been shooting the ball well. We’ve missed some easy layups and free throws, but I thought we moved the ball well last night and we shot it really well. I felt comfortable shooting the ball last night, and my teammates found me when I was hot.”
Rochelle led 28-19 at halftime over the Dukes, who were essentially a one-man army behind sophomore standout Jacob Gaither, who scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Dixon. Senior guard Austin Brown initiated most of the ball movement for the Hubs, finishing with a team-leading six assists while scoring 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
“The win gets us back in a rhythm,” Brown said. “We were really struggling and we weren’t winning games which doesn’t help. Hopefully this win increases our confidence to shoot the ball well and play good defense. We’re a little behind where we want to me, but we have a lot of room for improvement. We’re capable of improving a lot.”
Dixon made a late run in attempting for their first win, outscoring Rochelle 24-21 in the fourth quarter and coming within single digits of the Hubs. But the Dukes weren’t able to make enough baskets down the stretch, and they finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field and 24 percent from 3-point range. Guards Garrett Burdin and Ben Hickey each totaled six points for the Hubs on Tuesday.
