Boys Bowling: Frye earns All-Conference honors for third straight season

ROCHELLE — Logan Frye completed a three-peat of All-Conference honors on Monday evening, when the senior right-hander fired a six-game series score of 1,244 to anchor the Rochelle Hubs during the Interstate 8 Conference bowling tournament at T-Byrd Lanes.

Returning as the defending tournament champion, Frye opened this year’s tournament with a 589 series over his first three games. A massive fourth game of 268 had Frye in contention for championship honors once again, but the senior ultimately rolled a 655 series over the final three games to medal in second behind LaSalle-Peru’s Zach Quick, who shot a 1,307 series. Despite finishing second, Frye clinched All-Conference honors for the third straight season.

“It’s a great feeling,” Frye said. “I feel like I’ve been excelling as the years have gone on and the conference has only gotten tougher. I wanted to win again this year, but the kid I was bowling against is another very good senior and we’ve been competitors for the last two years.”

Monday marked the first time that Rochelle hosted an Interstate 8 boys bowling tournament at T-Byrd Lanes, which features wood lanes unlike the other host houses in the conference. Frye described it as “bowling on the burn” and said that bowling the conference tournament on wood lanes gave the Hubs (8-9, 4-4 Interstate 8) a unique advantage over their competition. Rochelle ended the tournament in third place at the varsity level with a final count of 6,432 pins.

“We’re one of the only teams that knows how to bowl on the burn,” Frye said. “We always do and every practice is typically on the burn… After the fifth game, my ball was barely able to get to the head pin. I was standing as far left as I could because the lanes are wood and they naturally hook a lot. There’s a lot of friction so when the lanes burn up, they hook a lot more.”

Frye opened the tournament with a 175 before finding his mark over the second and third games, where he posted scores of 210 and 204 to move closer to the top of the leaderboard. The senior crushed the 1-3 pin pocket during his fourth game, scoring a tournament-best 268 and throwing a 207 in his fifth game to take second in the standings with one game remaining.

“I made a lot of good shots and I thought I was in the pocket the whole day except for my last few shots of the last game I bowled,” Frye said. “Even when I missed, I would typically still strike, but if I didn’t, I would make my spare and move on. I started with my feet on the 20th board and I ended with my feet on the 38th board. I practice here in a lot of different ways and it felt natural for me to move across the lane and continue to get the ball through the middle.”

Frye concluded his tournament with a 180 to score a team-best 1,244 series for the Hubs, who will begin the postseason with the IHSA Kaneland Regional on Friday, Jan. 17 at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb. Junior Levi Waddle finished in ninth place with a series score of 1,111 and a high game of 215, while junior Declan McGee and sophomore Bryson Stewart took 19th and 21st with respective series scores of 1,043 and 1,037 in the final individual standings.

Rochelle won the JV conference championship on Monday evening, posting a team score of 2,357 over three games. Sophomore Luke Norris ribboned in second place with a 539 series, while freshman Austin Hartnett ribboned in fourth place with a 485 series. Sophomore Jorge Martinez rounded out Rochelle’s award winners, ribboning in seventh place with a 480 series.
