ROCHELLE — December has been kind to the Rochelle Hubs, who scored their second straight varsity bowling victory during Thursday’s nonconference match against Sterling.
Senior Logan Frye threw a team-high 662 series for the Hubs, who avenged an early-season loss at Sterling with a 3,263-3,145 win over the Golden Warriors at T-Byrd Lanes. All six varsity rolled 500-plus series scores for the Hubs (4-6, 2-2 Interstate 8), who won both the first and third games during Thursday’s match. Rochelle will face Dixon on the road Monday evening.
“We’ve been in a slump, but winning two matches in a row feels awesome,” Frye said. “We all struggled at Sterling that night, but we all bowled better tonight and it felt great to beat them here. If everyone bowls at least 500, then we’re guaranteed to have at least 3,000 and most teams bowl in the 3,000-to-3,100 range. We’re a lot more competitive when we bowl well.”
The Hubs opened their home match on Thursday with an 1,147-1,077 victory in the first game, where Frye fired a 222 and sophomore Luke Norris launched a series-best 200. Preston Near’s 224 and David Oelrichs’ 213 were the high scores on the Sterling side. Norris finished with a 564 series for the Hubs, who fell to the Golden Warriors 1,054-960 during the second game.
“I was hitting my mark and letting the ball do its job,” Norris said. “It feels pretty good and it’s nice to win. It felt pretty good to bounce back today. I think I’m making more spares and striking more this season. My goals are to stay on the varsity team and do my best. We’re doing good.”
While Sterling took the overall series lead after two games, Rochelle saved its best effort for last, outrolling the Golden Warriors 1,156-1,014 in the third and final game to clinch the match. Frye struck over his first five shots in the third game, finishing with a 222 after shooting a 218 in the second game of his series. Sophomore Bryson Stewart spun a series-best 205 to end the evening with a 508 series, while freshman Josef Alanis tossed a 191 to finish with a 512 series.
“I was trying to keep my speed down and I was playing really straight,” Frye said. “I don’t do that very often, but I struck a lot more than usual and it worked out pretty well. I still need to work on my spares and I probably would have shot a higher score, but I struck enough tonight.”
Junior Caleb Mortensen recorded a 512 series with a high score of 188, while junior Declan McGee added a 505 series with a high score of 193. Near led the Golden Warriors with a 607.
