ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub tennis team is peaking at the right time. With sectionals set to begin in three days, the Hubs concluded regular season play in decisive fashion, sweeping all three doubles matches during their nonconference varsity contest against Belvidere on Monday.
Junior Mark Green added a singles win for the Hubs, who rolled over the Bucs 4-1 in a series of 10-game pro set matches. It’s the fifth victory over the last six matches for the Hubs (8-9, 1-4 Interstate 8), who will host the IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional at RTHS on Friday and Saturday. The sectional tournament will feature an eight-team field that includes Rochelle, Aurora Central Catholic, IMSA, Marmion Academy, Kaneland, Mendota, Rockford Christian and Sycamore.
Rochelle scored the first doubles point of the match against Belvidere, taking a 1-0 lead after freshman David Eckardt and sophomore Noah McKinney teamed up for a dominant 10-1 win against Giovanni Barajas and Alex Dionicio at the No. 2 court. Junior Parker Slattengren and sophomore Amor Lara united to bring home the second doubles point of the evening for the Hubs, fending off Francesco Moscato and Marc Vargas for a 10-5 win at the No. 3 court.
Junior Caleb Mortensen and sophomore Sam Sergeant clinched the doubles sweep for the purple and white, outlasting Gabriel Yates and Travis Onley for a 10-8 victory at the No. 1 court. Rochelle and Belvidere split the two singles points, with Green taking down Jonathan Myszka 10-3 at the No. 1 court while sophomore Connor Hunley fell 4-10 against Charles Leonard at the No. 2 court. Rochelle concludes the season with a 7-5 record in nonconference competition.
