MENDOTA — Success in singles resulted in another victory for the Rochelle Hub tennis team on Monday evening, when the purple and white traveled for a varsity match against Mendota.
Juniors Mark Green and Philip Winters combined for two wins in singles play, while the Hubs claimed two of the three doubles points to outduel the Trojans 4-1 in nonconference action. The win clinches a two-match winning streak for the Hubs (5-8, 1-4 Interstate 8), who swept both singles matches in their 4-1 victory over Dixon last week. Rochelle will return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when the Hubs welcome Sterling Newman for their Senior Night match.
Winters dominated at the No. 2 singles court, cruising for a 6-1, 6-1 win against Trey Lee. Green fended off a second-set rally from Alex Holland to earn a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 1 singles court. In doubles, sophomore Noah McKinney and freshman David Eckardt continued their strong recent play, sealing the team victory by taking down B.J. Bresley and Harlan Gallagher 6-3, 6-1.
Junior Parker Slattengren and sophomore Amor Lara earned the No. 3 doubles point, trailing 5-7, 1-2 in the match against Wyatt Sondgeroth and Ryder Woods, who were forced to retire. Sophomores Connor Hunley and Sam Sergeant represented Rochelle at the No. 1 doubles court, falling just short in their 5-7, 3-6 loss against Aden Tillman and Cameron Escatel.
