ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team swept all three doubles matches against Newman Central Catholic on Friday, but the Comets surged back in singles play, taking five of the six available points to rally over Rochelle 5-4. The Hubs fell to 3-8 overall with the loss.
Sophomore Owen Haas and junior Peter Forsberg dominated Brady Partington and John Craft 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles, while juniors Devansh Patel and Jason Zheng outlasted James Rhodes and Thomas Powers 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore David Wanner and junior Alex Gilbert held on for a three-set win against Griffin Moran and Kaden Welty, taking the match 6-2, 3-6, 10-4.
Haas netted the lone singles win for the Hubs, defeating Partington 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Forsberg came up just short against Carson Palmer at No. 5 singles, losing 5-7, 3-6 while Gilbert fell 0-6, 1-6 against Logan Palmer at No. 2 singles. Zheng lost 3-6, 0-6 to Craft at No. 3 singles and Patel fell 1-6, 1-6 to Moran at No. 4 singles. With the match tied 4-4, Newman Central Catholic's Marvel Zhang handed Wanner a 6-4, 2-6, 6-10 loss at No. 1 singles.
