ROCHELLE — Juniors Mark Green and Philip Winters shined in singles play as the Rochelle Hub tennis team took the court for its nonconference varsity match against DeKalb on Monday.
Winters turned in a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Ata Shakir at the No. 2 singles court, while Green handled Jahan Islam for a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 singles court. While Rochelle claimed both singles points in the match, DeKalb secured all three doubles points to hand the Hubs a 3-2 defeat. Rochelle (3-5, 1-2 Interstate 8) will host LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Noah McKinney and freshman David Eckardt nearly took their No. 2 doubles match to three sets, falling just short in the second set and conceding a 1-6, 5-7 loss against Kameron Falk and Esteban Cardoso. Sophomores Derek Swartz and Connor Hunley took three games in their 0-6, 3-6 loss against Charlie Vander Bleek and Marcos Zaylik at the No. 3 doubles court.
Junior Caleb Mortensen and sophomore Sam Sergeant represented Rochelle at the No. 1 doubles court, earning one game in a 1-6, 0-6 loss to Rylan Lottes and Matthew Williams.
