ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team took second in the 2024 Hubs Dubs Tournament at RTHS on Saturday morning. Rochelle (2-0, 0-0 Interstate 8) tied with Harlem in the tournament, scoring 21 points. Freshmen Noah McKinney and Sam Sergeant scored the team’s lone title in the tournament, winning the No. 5 doubles division with a 5-0 record.
McKinney and Sergeant started the tournament with a 7-1 win against Harlem’s Chase Liney and Brayden Edmonds. The duo followed with a clean 7-0 sweep over Belvidere’s Giovanni Barajas and Julio Correa before scoring a 7-0 sweep over DeKalb’s David Torres and Jonathan Zuniga. McKinney and Sergeant clinched the title with a 7-1 win against Belvidere’s Francisco Moscato and Gabe Lopez as well as a 7-1 win over Rochelle’s Derek Swartz and Amor Lara.
Sophomore Christian Mascote and freshman Connor Hunley combined to take second in the No. 4 doubles division with a 4-1 record. Mascote and Hunley took down Harlem’s Riley Carlson and Matt Dyerson 7-4 before winning 7-3 over Streator’s Tyler Barbee and Delroy Jones. The pair fell 1-7 against DeKalb’s Esteban Cardoso and Eduardo Hernandez before rebounding with a 7-6(5) win over Belvidere’s Gabriel Inniss and Braulio Hernandez. Mascote and Hunley bowed out with a 7-2 win against Rochelle’s Owen Carmichael and William Miller in the last round.
Senior Alex McBride and sophomore Caleb Mortensen placed third in the No. 3 doubles division with a 3-2 record, opening the tournament with a 7-1 win over Harlem’s Connar Edwards and Dom Coleta. After falling 4-7 against Streator’s Clayton Lehman and Liam Martin, McBride and Mortensen fell 2-7 against DeKalb’s Marcos Zaylik and Ata Shakir. The Rochelle duo finished the tournament with a 7-4 win over Belvidere netters Gabriel Yates and Caiden Cabangal as well as a 7-4 win over the Rockford East duo of Brysen Vongprasearth and Mario Rivera.
Seniors Austin Raleigh and Eli Luxton placed third in the No. 2 doubles division with a 3-2 record, opening the tournament with a 4-7 loss against Harlem’s Lucas Santos and Shawn Austin and a 4-7 loss against Streator’s Brad Minick and Izak Gallik. Raleigh and Luxton fought back with a 7-5 win over DeKalb’s Charlie Vander Bleek and Kameron Falk before taking down Belvidere’s Travis Onley and Alex Dionicio 7-3. The Rochelle combo closed the tournament out with a clean 7-0 sweep against Rockford East netters Corbin Martin and Josh Luangphakdy.
Seniors Parker Lenkaitis and Jimmy Chavez finished fifth in the No. 1 doubles division with a 2-3 record, scoring a 7-6(8) victory over Harlem’s Ayden Mabrey and Luka Miljanic and a 7-2 win over Rockford East’s Abedi Amuri and Israel Lewers. Lenkaitis and Chavez fell 6-7(5) against Streator’s Ryan Beck and Brenden Christensen before a 1-7 loss to DeKalb’s Rylan Lottes and Matt Williams and a 5-7 loss to Belvidere’s Charles Leonard and Jonathan Myszka.
