FREEPORT — Junior Philip Winters continued a stellar start to his season on Monday night, when the Rochelle Hubs took the court for a nonconference varsity match against Freeport.
Winters emerged with a three-set victory at the No. 2 singles court, overcoming a tough loss in the opening set to take down Colin Helm 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Winters improved to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in singles play for the Hubs, who conceded all three doubles matches and split the two singles points in their 4-1 loss to the Pretzels on Monday. Rochelle (2-3, 1-1 Interstate 8) will resume Interstate 8 Conference action with a road match against Morris at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Junior Mark Green represented Rochelle at No. 1 singles, taking five games in a 4-6, 1-6 loss against Freeport’s Alex Cuatatl. Sophomores Amor Lara and Derek Swartz hung tough in their No. 3 doubles match against Jonathan Escamilla and Christian Ruiz-Paliro, nearly winning the second set in a 2-6, 5-7 defeat. Sophomore Noah McKinney and freshman David Eckardt had a promising start to their No. 2 doubles match, falling 4-6, 0-6 to Carlos Delavin and JC Herrera.
Junior Caleb Mortensen and sophomore Sam Sergeant took the court at No. 1 doubles, falling in a 0-6, 0-6 sweep against Diego Robles Sanchez and Caden DeJong.
