DAR prepares for Veteran’s Day, Wreaths Across America

Posted

ROCHELLE — Recently added to the resources at the Flagg Township Museum in Rochelle are digital listings including photographs of the gravestones of veterans interred at Trinity and St. Patrick's Cemeteries.

These listings were compiled by the Rochelle Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution by visiting the cemeteries and searching for markers that indicated a reference to military service and are used to facilitate placing flags on veterans' graves for Veterans' Day and Memorial Day.

In addition, these lists will be used to place wreaths that are donated for "any veteran" at the upcoming Wreaths across America ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 19 beginning at 2 p.m. It is the DAR’s goal to obtain sponsors, prior to the Nov. 30 deadline, for all 163 veterans who have been identified at St. Patrick's Cemetery and 135 at Trinity Memory Gardens. It is possible that these lists are not complete and if you would like to confirm that your veteran is included, please stop by the museum during regular hours to view the lists.

These lists will be updated with the names of veterans we have missed and will be highlighted as part of the museum's Veterans' Day program on Sunday, Nov. 14 from 11-4 p.m. The Veterans' Day program will include displays of Aubrey Headon's "Veterans Dress," a special loan of the poster "Salute to "Butch Halsne" by the late Tyler Smith, local historic World War II interviews and historic videos.
