ROCHELLE — Dixon J. Montgomery (1949-2025) was a great husband for over 51 years to Mary Ann, father to Susan Ferrara (Zack Calhoon), son to Gloria and the late James “Big Jim” Montgomery, and brother to his late sister, Robin. He loved and was loved by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and was a friend to every person he met.
He enjoyed his food, in particular fried egg sandwiches, spring rolls, and any dessert offered, whether homemade or not. He was a lover of music, books on tape, and fishing trips with his buddies.
He died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 1:00 am. A time that, in life, would have been perfect for pizza, loud music, and a hug and kiss from his wife and best friend, Mary Ann.
He was a kind and generous man who served as a tank gunner with Troop A, First Squadron, First Armored Cavalry in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. During an ambush in September of 1970, his tank was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, which left him blind. Despite the severity of his injuries, his motto remained “keep on truckin” and he gifted those who loved him plenty of good stories, horrible jokes, the support of a gentle ear, and hugs. He will be remembered by those who knew him for an hour, a day, or a lifetime, for the good humor he left in his wake.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. A private graveside burial will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. Visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
