ROCHELLE — While the Rochelle girls bowling team battles for its first victory of the season, head coach Joey Johanning said he has seen progress in several areas from the Lady Hubs.
Rochelle hosted the Sterling Golden Warriors on Thursday, continuing a busy week that included meets against the Kaneland Knights and Sycamore Spartans. The Lady Hubs fell a little short of victory on Tuesday, and they came close once again on Thursday, falling 2,727-2,262 against Sterling and moving to 0-7 overall.
“I think the girls have done very well,” Johanning said. “I wanted them to be very goal-oriented and a lot of them are continuously hitting those goals. We’ve had a number of personal high scores already beaten this year which is fantastic. We have a couple of girls who are working on getting new equipment so I think we’ll see even more improvements.”
The Golden Warriors opened the match with an early lead, claiming the first game 890-700 behind 190 from Zoey Paone, who finished with a team-leading 609 series. Senior Cassie Moore and junior Kiya Porter stepped up for the Lady Hubs in the second game, with both bowlers totaling 146 despite Sterling taking the game 893-798. Junior Ceci Vargas rolled 142 and sophomore Alyssa Mickley added 157 in the middle game. Paone paced Sterling with 225.
“Kiya and Cassie have new equipment and that’s a big adjustment,” Johanning said. “Kiya went from a conventional ball to a fingertip ball and that’s a huge adjustment, but she’s done really well and kept a positive attitude. Cassie had a ball that didn’t hook a lot, but her new ball has a lot of backend reaction to it, so she’s making that adjustment and doing a great job as well.”
Sophomores Alyssa Schwanert and Anna Samo were high rollers for Rochelle in the third game, with Schwanert recording 157 and Samo shooting 150. The Golden Warriors won the final game 974-764 behind 194 from Paone and 192 from Grace Schultz. Mickley led the Lady Hubs with a 403 series, while Samo finished with 388, Porter totaled 380 and Schwanert chipped in 378.
“Anna’s doing really well and we’re going to work on getting her a ball,” Johanning said. “The nice thing about having a lot of young girls on the team is that we can grow together. A lot of the girls are working hard.”
