ROCHELLE — Seniors Jacob Ost and Chris Hickey each earned varsity starts on Tuesday evening, when the Rochelle Hub golf team hosted DeKalb for its final dual match of the year.

Hickey carded a 48 and Ost added a 52 for the Hubs, who overcame rainy and wet conditions to outscore the Barbs 161-169 and conclude the regular season with a Senior Night victory. Both Ost and Hickey have been varsity contributors at Rochelle (11-3, 4-1 Interstate 8) throughout their respective high school careers. The lone seniors on the roster, Ost has been a member of the golf team for four years, while Hickey has played for two years after joining as a junior.

“I’ve been in and out of the varsity lineup, so it felt really good to contribute to the team and help us win,” Ost said. “I’ve improved the most on playing smart golf and not worrying about my score as much. I’ve enjoyed going out to all of the different courses and having fun with the guys. I’ve played with a lot of different people since my freshman year. We had a small team when I was freshman, but we’ve had a much bigger team over the last two years. It’s been fun.”

Junior Ian Metzger led the Hubs with a 2-over-par 38, while sophomore Owen Carmichael landed two strokes behind with a 40. Sophomores Johnny Chadwick and Alex Dyer turned in respective scores of 41 and 42 to round out the top four varsity golfers for the Hubs, who will travel for the Sterling Invitational at Emerald Hill on Saturday for their final regular season tournament. The IHSA 2A Sterling Regional will be held at Emerald Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

“It’s been a struggle to lower my scores, but it was a bit of a confidence booster to know that I could contribute to a varsity win,” said Hickey, who ran cross country for two years before joining the golf team as a junior. “I’m new to golf, but I think I’ve improved in all areas of my game including my short game. Golf is a more relaxing environment and it’s easier on the body. I’ve tried to be a role model for the team and I try to help the younger players however I can.”
