DEKALB — The Rochelle Hub varsity golf team saw two players clinch All-Conference honors during the Interstate 8 Conference tournament at Kishwaukee Country Club on Monday.

Junior Ian Metzger led the Hubs with a 76, shooting an even-par 35 over the back nine holes to medal in third place for the tournament and secure All-Conference honors for the third time in his high school career. An Honorable Mention in the Interstate 8 during his freshman season, Metzger has earned All-Conference as Rochelle’s No. 1 player over each of the last two years.

“It’s a good feeling and it shows that I played well throughout the year,” said Metzger, who made a birdie on the par-3 15th hole Monday. “I showed up and played solid golf… I know I can win when I play my best golf, but I didn’t come out with a good start and I was playing from behind all day. I thought I might be able to make it back down the stretch, but I wasn’t able to. I hit more greens on the back nine and I put the ball in better spots. I got up and down a few times too.”

Sophomore Alex Dyer carded an 80 with 38 over the back nine holes to medal in sixth place for the tournament and lock down All-Conference recognition for the second consecutive season. Like Metzger, Dyer was an Honorable Mention in the Interstate 8 during his freshman campaign. Dyer closed out his round on Monday with seven consecutive pars to remain in the top 10.

“I was able to putt very well,” Dyer said. “I struggled with my wedges so that will be something I’ll be practicing before going into regionals. I drove the ball very well today. It means a lot to be All-Conference because I put a lot of work in over the summer and I played very well in a lot of our meets. It’s a good feeling and I thought I brought it today, but I know I can play a lot better.”

The Hubs (10-3, 4-1 Interstate 8) won four of their five conference dual meets entering Monday’s tournament, where Rochelle finished fifth out of six teams with a final score of 359. Sophomore Johnny Chadwick scored a 94 and senior Chris Hickey finished with 109 to round out the top four varsity players for the Hubs, who will host DeKalb for Senior Night on Tuesday.

On JV, Rochelle also took fifth out of six schools in the Interstate 8 tournament. Sophomore Owen Carmichael led the way with a 92, while sophomore Mason Ludwig carded a 95.
