ROCHELLE — Temporary repairs have been made to a building that sustained damages from high winds over the weekend.
Emergency personnel responded to the area near Lincoln Highway and Cherry Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports of metal roofing materials in the roadway.
Rochelle Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville said the previous owners of the building located at 306 Lincoln Highway installed metal roofing over the original deteriorating roof, which was not secured properly.
“There is nothing behind that building to stop that wind. The big winds coming straight out from the west found a loose edge and it started peeling,” Sawlsville said. “It was probably one big gust of wind and it caught the metal roofing and tore it off. A couple of sheets ended up on a roof across the street on the old savings and loan building.”
Responding crews quickly determined there were no injuries or damage structurally to the building; the roadways were temporarily closed to protect motorists and residents from the debris while it was being cleared from the scene.
High wind warnings were in effect throughout the day on Sunday with peak gusts clocked in at 56 miles per hour from the west.
“There is no interior damage as far as I can see,” said Shane Erdmann, owner of Rochelle PC Solutions and tenant.
The streets were opened once the area was cleared.
“City staff was present while repairs were made to secure the roof temporarily,” said Building Inspector Kip Countryman.
