LINDENWOOD — Horst Robert Hohendorf, 84, formerly of Palatine, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. Horst was born on July 9, 1935 in Berlin, Germany, to Robert and Erika (Obst) Hohendorf.
He married Doris Oesterle on Oct. 1, 1960 in Chicago, and were married 50 years before she preceded him in death on June 12, 2011.
He worked as an automotive apprentice in Germany before immigrating to America in 1957. After arriving in America, he worked as a diesel mechanic at Cummins in Chicago and later as a machinist at American Can Company in Barrington. Horst enjoyed sailing and traveling with his family, exploring this great country and looking for enjoyable places to eat. He and his wife, Doris, had a love for classical music and attended many operas. He had a love of the Lord and shared the Gospel with many even up until his last day on earth.
Horst is survived by two children, Michael Hohendorf of Palatine and Elke (Richard) Drendel of Lindenwood, and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew Drendel.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. The funeral will follow the visitation at 5 p.m. with Pastors Nick Tornabene and Robert Finegan officiating. Graveside service will be at Union Cemetery in Palatine at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5.
Memorials may be made in Horst’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
