ROCHELLE — Jean Ann (Ohl) MacTaggart, 83, of Rochelle, passed away Dec. 30, 2020 at Cherryvale Place, Rockford, where she had been cared for since Jan. 15, 2017. Jean was born at home May 22, 1937 near Volga, IA to Clarence and Lucillia “Lucy” (Lawver) Ohl. Jean was raised and educated in the Strawberry Point, Iowa, area schools. Graduating from Strawberry Point High School in 1955. An honor student, involved in vocal music, band, basketball and football cheerleader.
After graduating she married Clarence MacTaggart on Sept. 11, 1955. Their first home was in Charles City, Iowa, where Clarence attended trade school and Jean worked in a laundromat. In January 1956 they moved to Carthage, Ill., where they both worked in a printing company for three and a half years, then to Tipton, Iowa, for three and a half years. In 1963 moved to Rochelle, where they lived until April 2020. Raising their five sons and later three granddaughters to adulthood. Jean worked for 22 years at Spurgeon’s Department Store in Rochelle until the store closed and then continued part-time at Printing Etc. until 2002.
Jean enjoyed baking (making many birthday and wedding cakes), reading, knitting, traveling (visiting all 50 states, some of Canada and Mexico), playing cards and attending the sons’ and grandchildren’s music and sporting events.
Jean is survived by husband, Clarence; and sons, David Clarence (Connie) of Libertyville, Chris Willoughby (Barbara) of Glen Ellyn, Scott Allen of Chicago, James Edward of Rockford, and Thomas Paul (Julie) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Shannon (Fanio) Belmonte of Rochelle, Sarah Lynn of Urbana, and Ashley Nicole of Rockford, who they raised for some of 13 years, Melissa Ann of Sterling, Eric Barclay (Dana) of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Bruce Duncan of Highland Park, Adam Price (Laurene) of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Africa, Kevin Andrew of Lisle, and Justin Allen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one great-granddaughter, Petra Catherine of Ethiopia; brother, Edward (Barbara) Ohl of Marion, Iowa; and sister, Sharon (David) Streicher of Casa Grande, Arizaona; as well as many cousins throughout the country.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Maxine and Mary.
Jean’s cremains will be entered in Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point, Iowa, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s.
