STINNETT, Tex. — “Doc” Onley, 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 3, 2024.
He was born and raised in Kings, Illinois to Harold and Mabel Onley and was the third of six children. He was active in football and wrestling as a student in high school and graduated from Rochelle High School in 1956. He received state honors in wrestling and was offered a full college scholarship but turned it down to attend Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owatonna, Minnesota. He became a State Missionary for the state of Illinois.
He married Sondra Lea (Thompson) on June 26, 1959, in Monroe Center, Illinois and they were blessed with eight children. Over the years he pastored churches across Illinois, Minnesota, Wyoming and Colorado. His last pastorate was in Greeley, Colorado at Faith Bible Baptist Church from 1977-1995.
Doc also took correspondence courses through Faith Bible Theological Seminary in Milton, Florida where he received two doctorates.
Doctorate of Religious Education and Doctorate of Laws and Letters.
In 1995 he and his wife moved to Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in California where he was a Bible Professor. The college moved to Oklahoma City where it changed names to Heartland Baptist Bible College. He was there until 2007.
In 2008 Doc and Sondra moved to Ba, Figi as missionaries. He donated his extensive library of books to three colleges in Figi. They were on the field until 2014.
In 2014 they moved back to Greeley, Colorado and were members of Windsor Baptist Church until 2022 when they moved to Stinnett, Texas and joined Riverview Baptist Church.
He was an author of several Biblical commentaries.
Doc is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, two sons (Timothy & James), and three grandchildren.
Doc is survived by his wife; Sondra, two sisters; JoAnn and Donna, six children; Beth (John) Garber, Lynn (Jeff) Morrison, Steve (Liana) Onley, Pete (Shelly) Onley, Becki (Greg) Schindorff, Debby (Josh) Siefert, 47 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren, and a host of extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Riverview Baptist Church, 500 Riverview St., Borger, Texas 79007. Burial will follow in Stinnett Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. The family will receive guests from 5-7 pm on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the funeral home.
