ROCHELLE — Mary Lou Kator, 81, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at her home in Rochelle, Illinois with family by her side. Mary Lou was born on December 8, 1943 to Walter and Gertrude (Hinz) Buchman in New Castle, IN. On August 29, 1964, she married William George Kator in Indianapolis, IN.
Mary Lou had many interests and stayed active over the years. Prior to becoming a minister, she was a nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. After moving to Rochelle, she was the pastor at St. Jude Episcopal Church in Rochelle. She loved history and machine embroidering and was an avid reader. She played guitar and enjoyed amateur theater, participating with the Stage Coach Players. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR).
As a minister, Mary Lou did more than preach—she lived her faith through action. She offered counsel, lifted spirits, and reminded people of the strength they carried within themselves. She believed in the power of kindness, in the importance of community, and in the sacredness of every soul she encountered.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill; four children: Michelle Kator, Christopher (Sharon) Kator, Jerome Kator, and Martin (Chandra) Kator; seven grandchildren: Vanessa (Justin) Isaacs, Luci and Susan Schmidt, Autumn, Nathan and Jerome Kator and Jade Hubler; two great grandchildren: Henry Isaacs and Nolan Wilson and two sisters: Joanne Dye and Kris Laverdure.
