CARPENTERSVILLE — Norma Jean (nee Holst) Hewitt, age 87, of Carpentersville, passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2025, at her home. She was born on March 2, 1938, in Benton County, Iowa, and was the daughter of the late Waldo Lorenz and Frieda Caroline (nee Pingle) Holst.
Norma was raised on her family’s farm in Keystone, Iowa, with her seven siblings, Duane, Dean, Dale, Eileen, Jan, David, and Julie. She was a 1956 graduate of Keystone High School. After high school, Norma attended St. Luke’s Nurse Training in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1958. While she was in nurse training, she met her husband, Frank Hewitt. They married on October 25, 1959, and lived together for 65 years. Frank and Norma moved to Rochelle, Illinois, where she was very active and ran the Christian book and gift store for many years. They then moved to Carpentersville. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee, where Frank was the director of parish ministry.
Norma is survived by her husband and best friend of 65 years, Frank; her children, Debra (the late Charles) Whelton, of Bloomington, Illinois, Barbara (Gary) Lewallen, of Schaumburg, Laura Terry, of Sterling, Illinois, and Sandra (Andre) Manaois of Algonquin; and her grandchildren: Matt, Mike, Kaitlin, Jackson, Sophie, and Sam. Norma was looking forward to the birth of her first great-grandchild later this year.
At Norma’s request, she was cremated. She did not wish to have a public memorial service, so her private family inurnment will be at a later date at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rochelle. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee or St. Croix Hospice in Huntley.
