ROCHELLE — At its monthly meeting Monday, the Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District Board of Commissioners heard a recap of operations in 2024 presented by Park District Executive Director Jackee Ohlinger as the year comes to a close.
Ohlinger said 2024 included the purchase of new playground equipment for Hillcrest, Sweeney, VFW and Skare Parks. The purchase was made through a 50 percent Gametime grant program that will result in about $250,000 in savings.
The park district also completed significant tree clearing projects at Midwest Park, Skare Park and Lake Sule. The renovation project at Helms Park that included the removal of the track around the football field began early in 2024 as well. The district also underwent a technology conversion to ensure smoother operations and better service for the community. Staff also completed specific emergency safety training to have the ability to train and certify district employees.
"2024 has been a banner year for community engagement," Ohlinger said. "Spring Lake Pool achieved the highest attendance we've had in over four years. The driving range at Skare Park saw participation and revenue continue to climb, reflecting its growing popularity. And REC Center memberships have soared to 2,300, which is the highest number since opening. Our programs reached unprecedented participation levels with families from over 24 ZIP codes joining us here."
The park district secured over $239,000 in grant funds and received $120,000 in donations in 2024. Ohlinger also detailed the park district's plans for 2025.
"Looking ahead, we're committed to building our successes using our 50 percent grant to replace the aging playgrounds to ensure safety and engaging spaces for children, making facility investments at Spring Lake Pool, the Little League fields, Helms North and Atwood Park to enhance community offerings; and increasing partnerships and strengthening collaboration with local organizations. I'm confident our efforts this year have left a lasting mark on our community."
Budget
The board held a public hearing for and unanimously approved an amendment to its fiscal year 2024-2025 budget and appropriations to include the playground improvements along with plans for new lights at the softball field at Tilton Memorial Park and a new pool heater.
Turkey Trot
Park District Director of Recreation Maureen Stevens said during the meeting that the district's recent Turkey Trot event on Thanksgiving morning drew nearly 200 participants.
"It was a chilly morning, so we were pleased with that turnout," Stevens said. "We ended up raising over $2,300 for the ENGAGE fund."
ENGAGE is the park district's financial assistance program that's available to anyone who qualifies. Those eligible can get a membership or recreational dollars throughout park district programs and facilities.
