ROCHELLE — Paul Howard Mayer, 81, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Illinois with his family by his side. Paul was born on October 23, 1943, the son of Howard and Irene (Hartmann) Mayer in Dixon, IL. On June 27, 1992, he married Debra Alfano in Rochelle.
Paul was in fertilizer sales for many years, drove truck and finished out his working years driving bus for the Rochelle school district. He enjoyed karaoke, gardening, playing cards and just floating in the pool. In his younger years, he loved umpiring Little League baseball and driving fast cars. Paul was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rochelle.
In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his wife, Deb in April, 2022; son, Danny Mayer in 1974; daughter, Nicole Mayer in April, 2016; grandson, Kyle Mayer in February 1994; and sister and brother-in-law, Jodi (Rev. Jerry) Harms.
Paul leaves behind three children: David (Lorri) Mayer of Lindenwood, IL, Alex (Crystal) Dodson of Ashton, IL and Matthew Dodson of Durango, CO; five grandchildren: Amber (Matthew) Wittenauer, Ally (Jeremy) Bagg, Paige Meyer, Courtney Dodson and Brooke Dodson; five great grandchildren: Autumn, Bentley, Chesney, Hayden and Isaac and brothers and sisters-in-laws, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Paul’s family would like to thank The Meadows of Franklin Grove, Franklin Grove Nursing Home and Serenity Hospice and Home for their wonderful care.
The memorial visitation will be from 9:00 - 11:20 A.M., Saturday, April 5, 2025 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1415 10th Ave., Rochelle. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 A.M., Saturday with Pastor Michael Wolff officiating. Following the service, everyone is invited to the VFW Post 3878, 318 4th Ave., Rochelle for a celebration of Paul’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul’s memory to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Serenity Hospice and Home. Cremation care has been provided by the Unger-Horner Funeral Home.
