OREGON – The lawyer representing the Byron man accused of killing his wife and son in 2016 told a judge on Nov. 18 that he is reviewing documents and other items the defense has received from prosecutors in the case.

During a pre-trial hearing, Christopher Derango said the defense is still waiting for some items from prosecutors in the case against Duane Meyer. 

Meyer is accused of setting the 2016 fire in Byron that killed his ex-wife, Maggie Meyer, and 3-year-old son, Amos.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said his office has so far turned over roughly 35,000 pages of discovery to the defense in the case. 

The items include police reports from multiple agencies, expert reports, laboratory notes, cell phone forensics and autopsy reports. 

Morrow said most of the items are in a digital format.

Also included were videos of interviews and crime scene photos, he said.

Meyer was charged on Oct. 9 with four counts of first degree homicide, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death. He is currently being held in the Ogle County Jail on a $10 million bond.

Judge John Roed denied a request by the defense Oct. 16 to lower Meyer’s bond amount.

Roe set the next pre-trial hearing for Jan. 8, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.
