RPD’s annual ‘Cop on a Rooftop’ event held Friday, raised money for Special Olympics Illinois

‘We've had a lot of community support and our officers get to meet new people’

ROCHELLE — On Friday, May 16, the Rochelle Police Department held its annual Cop on a Rooftop event at Dunkin Donuts to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

Officers and members of RPD were in the drive thru and on the roof of the business, interacting with the community and accepting donations.

“Things have been going great,” RPD Deputy Chief Phil Frankenberry said. “We've had a lot of community support and our officers get to meet new people in the community that they haven't met before. It's just a great community event for a great cause.”

RPD has raised money for Special Olympics Illinois for many years through its Cop on a Rooftop, Torch Run and golf outing events. May 11-17 was also National Police Week, and RPD saw support from local businesses.

“Police Week is an honor every year,” Frankenberry said. “It's good to see the support from the community and businesses bring us food and treats. Officers don't get to see that all the time. It's just a good thing.”

RPD saw off-duty dispatchers and officers attend the Cop on a Rooftop event, which Frankenberry said showed dedication to the cause and community.

“The community gets to see a different side of us on days like today,” Frankenberry said. “We have a lot of new officers and people come through here and get to meet them. It's an all around good experience. It puts faces to names.”
