Signs of spring at the museum

Posted

ROCHELLE — A sure sign of spring is the uncovering of the iron drinking fountain in front of the Flagg Township Museum.
“A Look Inside the Iron Fountain” will start at 11 a.m. in front of the museum at Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street in downtown Rochelle.
Museum board member Steve Frank will be climbing down underneath the sidewalk to turn on the fountain’s water.

The fountain was brought to the city by Laura Fessler in 1915. It originally stood on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Lincoln Highway but was moved to in front of the municipal building, then removed and put in storage. After years in storage, it was reinstalled in front of the museum at Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street.
The fountain has several levels.  Horses, dogs, birds and even people all have a spot to get cool water on a hot day.
There will be a short program and after the fountain is turned on, light refreshments will e served.
There is no charge for this event.
