ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hubs were unable to break through against a talented Sycamore pitching staff during Monday’s Interstate 8 Conference varsity softball matchup.
Addison Dierschow and Bella Jacobs combined to throw five perfect innings while striking out 12 batters for the Spartans, who held Rochelle without a hit as the Lady Hubs fell 11-0 to remain winless in conference action. Senior Lauren Dyer took the circle for Rochelle (3-9, 0-2 Interstate 8), firing five innings and striking out three batters. The Lady Hubs will return to the diamond on Wednesday, when Rochelle will head east for a matchup against Kaneland at 4:30 p.m.
Sycamore took the early lead on Monday, tallying five runs in the top of the first inning. Addison Armstrong sparked the Sycamore offense, belting an RBI double to right field before Faith Heil followed with an RBI single to left field. Riley Schuller kept the Spartan offense moving, sending a two-run homer over the left-field wall to give Sycamore a 4-0 lead. Brighton Snodgrass capped off the five-run frame for the Spartans, pounding an RBI double on a grounder to right.
Kairi Lantz delivered an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give the Spartans a 6-0 advantage. Sycamore tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning before taking a double-digit lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, where Kaitlyn Williams belted a two-run double to center and Snodgrass followed with a sacrifice fly. Dierschow struck out six batters over three frames and Jacobs added six strikeouts over the final two frames.
