MAPLE PARK — Freshman Mya Martinez went 3 for 4 with three singles and two RBIs to lead the Rochelle Lady Hubs during their Interstate 8 Conference varsity softball game at Kaneland.
Rochelle totaled nine hits and took the early lead over the Knights, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning against the ICA’s No. 8 ranked team in Class 3A. But a late surge from the Knights, who tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, enabled Kaneland to hold on for an 8-4 win over the Lady Hubs. Junior Madigan Williams and sophomore Briel Metzger each collected one hit and one RBI for Rochelle (3-10, 0-3 Interstate 8) in the loss on Wednesday.
Sophomore Emma Heller sparked the three-run second inning for the Lady Hubs, smacking a one-out double on a liner to center field. Sophomore Phelisity Lopez drew a walk to put two runners on base for Metzger, who hit the ball hard to the shortstop side for a run-scoring infield single to give Rochelle a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back two-out singles from Williams and Martinez brought home a pair of runners to put the Lady Hubs ahead 3-0 in the top of the second.
An RBI groundout from Natalie Naab in the bottom of the second inning resulted in Kaneland’s first run of the game. After a scoreless third inning, Naab delivered another RBI for the Knights in the bottom of the fourth inning, singling on a ground ball to third that scored Brynn Woods.
Kaneland tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, where the Knights rallied for four runs to take a 6-3 lead over the Lady Hubs. A lead-off single and a sacrifice bunt led to a game-tying single from Lillyanna Crawford, who reached on an infield hit to the first-base side. Two untimely errors on Rochelle loaded the bases for Kaneland’s Angelina Campise, who belted the biggest hit of the game, a three-run triple to center field, that cleared the bases and put the Knights up.
Kaneland added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, where Graycin Slou crushed a home run over the center-field wall as the Knights went ahead 8-3. Rochelle tacked on its final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, scoring after a one-out double from sophomore Jaclynn Lira led to an RBI single from Martinez two batters later. Heller pitched all six innings for the Lady Hubs, striking out six batters while allowing only one walk.
