ROCHELLE – Two local organizations are helping individuals learn more about their family history.

Laurie Carline Perry, from the Rochelle chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will be hosting three upcoming genealogy workshops at the Flagg Township Museum. The DAR is hosting the workshops to help people learn more about their family tree, while also shedding light on the many things the DAR does.

“The workshops are here to help people get started doing any kind of genealogy work, as well as helping people build upon any research they have already done,” said Jan Devore, director of the Flagg Township Museum. “It gives a perspective that goes beyond what people think of when they hear the DAR, which is strictly making a connection to the revolutionary war.”

The workshops are free to attend and set for Sunday, March 15, April 19 and May 17, all from 1-3:30 p.m. The museum hopes that hosting the meetings in its building will also bring attention to the free research station it has set up for the public.

The research station was provided by the Rochelle Area Community Foundation through a grant last year. The station can be used for many different tasks from looking through old documents that have been digitized, to determining when one’s relatives immigrated from overseas.

With the many different genealogy tests available and the invention of the Internet, people have recently become more interested in family history. No matter the amount of previous research done, the workshops will benefit everyone who attends.

“The workshops are very well done and people will get a lot out of it,” said Devore. “If you even think you are interested in this, it is an excellent starting place. It is not just for starters though, if you have experience doing this, there will still be something new that you will learn.”
