ROCHELLE — Although severe weather cut their head-to-head meet with LaSalle-Peru short, the Rochelle Hub and Lady Hub track and field teams picked up a pair of victories on Tuesday.
The Hubs outscored LaSalle-Peru 72.5-32.5, while the Lady Hubs edged the Cavaliers 56-49 through 13 events. The Hubs won nine total events on Tuesday, while the Lady Hubs won eight events including the shot put, where senior thrower Erin Murphy set her second straight outdoor school record with a heave of 11.65 meters (38 feet 2 ½ inches). Rochelle will travel west on Friday, when the Hubs and Lady Hubs will compete in the Rocket Invitational at Rock Falls.
Hubs
Rochelle took four of the six field events during the meet against the Cavaliers. Junior Andrew Nuyen won two of those four events, claiming the pole vault with a clearance of 5.06 meters and the long jump with a distance of 6.43 meters. Junior Caden Goodwin took the triple jump with a leap of 12.51 meters and senior Jack Tilton won the high jump with a height of 1.88 meters.
Seniors Jacob Ost and Jack Tarvestad led Rochelle in the throwing events, with Ost marking 12.44 meters for third in the shot put and Tarvestad hitting 33.45 meters for fourth in the discus throw. Rochelle won all three relay races, taking the 3200-meter relay (Pedro Rosales, Chris Hickey, Carlos Olazagasti and Tyler Johnson) with a time of 9:18.24 and the 400-meter relay (Caden Goodwin, Justin DeClerck, Nathan Rosas and Caiden Redlarczyk) in 44.18 seconds.
The final event of the meet was the 800-meter relay, which Rochelle (Aaron DeClerck, Justin DeClerck, Ethan Sturges and German Albertson) won with a time of 1:40.62. Junior Wyatt Worthington led the Hubs in the 110-meter hurdles, taking the event with a time of 17.46 seconds. Junior Caden Goodwin sprinted a PR of 11.63 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and freshman Eduardo Cisneros ran a time of 12:29.83 for second place in the 3200-meter run.
Lady Hubs
Rochelle claimed five of the six field events during the meet with LaSalle-Peru. Murphy won both the shot put and the discus, winning the discus with a mark of 23.53 meters. Seniors Dempsey Atkinson and Taelynn Rodeghero each won field events, with Atkinson marking 10.06 meters in the triple jump and Rodeghero clearing 1.37 meters in the high jump. Junior Samantha Overton set a PR of 2.23 meters to win the pole vault for the Lady Hubs.
Rochelle won two of the three relay races, taking the 3200-meter relay (Brisa Zepeda, Marley Cherry, Carol Carpenter and Kyrie Cragin) with a time of 11:15.98 and the 400-meter relay (Gwendolyn O’Dell, Zoey Schabacker, Abygail Losoya and Reese Kissack) with a time of 53.92 seconds. The Lady Hubs concluded the meet by finishing second in the 800-meter relay (Elyse Manning, Dylan Etes, Gwendolyn O’Dell and Alex Neece) with a time of 1:55.63.
Sophomore Vivian Worthington led Rochelle in the distance events, winning the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:46.18. Sophomore Jasmine Walsh and senior Marianna Saldana were the team’s top hurdlers, taking second and third in the 100-meter hurdles with times of 19.00 and 19.44 seconds. Freshman Carol Carpenter set a PR of 2:44.38 for second in the 800-meter run.
Freshman Gwendolyn O’Dell and sophomore Elyse Manning recorded Rochelle’s top times in the 100-meter dash, placing second and third with times of 13.71 and 13.87 seconds.
