ROCHELLE – On the eve of our nation’s 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, the museum celebrates the historic ride for freedom by Paul Revere that took place on April 18, 1775, with Two Lights for Tomorrow, a program for all ages on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. Paul Revere’s ride on April 18, 1775, was made famous by the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1860 during a time when the nation was facing another crisis, the Civil War. Longfellow wrote it as a reminder for unity and peace, taking some liberties with the details but establishing Paul Revere as a national hero. The museum’s celebration includes stories, activities, and two lights for each family along with light refreshments. Hear more about Paul Revere, try your hand at making a tricorn hat or a mobcap or be inspired to write a poem of your own.
It’s Poetry Month in April and an appropriate time to recognize this famous poem by Longfellow or write your own. The deadline for students to submit an original poem to the 2025 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards contest is May 1, 2025. Information is available at the museum or online at https://ilhumanities.org/programs/gwendolyn-brooks-youth-poetry-awards.
