BYRON — The Rochelle Wrestling Club kicked off the 2019-20 season this past weekend. The Junior Hubs sent 15 young grapplers to the DeKalb Beginners Championships on Saturday before the club fielded 30 competitors for the Byron Xtreme Championships on Sunday.
DeKalb
Eight wrestlers battled in the Tots Division including Elliot Huff and Nehemiah Andronic, who both went 2-0 to take first place in their respective weight classes. Felix Belmonte (1-1) placed second while Silas Alsop (1-1) and Quade Dickey (1-1) finished third. Xander Gonzales and Rowen Villalobos each took fourth.
Landon Johnson led Rochelle’s six Bantam Division grapplers with a 2-1 record and a first-place finish. Brantley Koenig (2-1) placed second while Misha Krawcewicz (1-2) took third. Cole Albers, Lindzi Kirk and Garrett Miller all finished fourth. Benjamin Morris wrestled as the lone Intermediate Division competitor, taking second with a 2-1 record.
Byron
Four Rochelle kids competed in the Tots Division including Silas Alsop, who won his weight class with a 3-0 record. Nehemiah Andronic (1-2), Daniel Johnson (1-2) and Phinehas Nadig (1-2) all placed third at the championships.
Nine Bantam Division wrestlers participated, with Teddy Millard (3-0) and Emilyn Voight (3-0) each bringing home first-place finishes. Elijah Nadig (2-1) and Montana Contreras (2-1) took second place while Dominic Escatel (2-1), Quaid Heitz (1-2) and Misha Krawcewicz (1-2) placed third in their respective brackets. Cole Albers and Garrett Miller both finished fourth.
Zachary Johnson (3-0) and Tyson Pavlak (3-0) led Rochelle in the Intermediate Division with two first-place finishes. Axel Alsop (1-2) placed third while Aidan Lopez finished fourth. Rochelle fielded three second-place finishers in the Novice Division including Tony Milburn (2-1), Benjamin Nadig (3-1) and Deegan Schabacker (2-1). Roman Villalobos (1-2) and Brenden Voight (1-2) both took third while Fernando Bautista and Brandin Kirk placed fourth.
Six Senior Division wrestlers battled, with Xavier Villalobos going 3-0 to take first place in his bracket. Tommy Tourdot (2-1), Grant Gensler (2-1) and Joseph Nadig (2-1) each finished second while Weylin Nay (1-2) placed third and Jack Pavlak took fourth.
