Rochelle matmen move to 4-0 on the season

STILLMAN VALLEY — The Rochelle Hubs remained unbeaten in varsity wrestling on Thursday, when the purple and white beat Stillman Valley and Le-Win/Stockton in nonconference action.

The Hubs dominated Stillman Valley 74-6 and scored a 46-26 win over Le-Win/Stockton, the No. 5 ranked team in Class 1A. Rochelle (4-0, 0-0 Interstate 8) did not concede a single head-to-head match in its dual against Cardinals, whose lone victory came via forfeit. The Hubs will return to the mat for the Giardini Invitational at Rockford East on Friday and Saturday.

Le-Win/Stockton

Freshman Aidan Lopez received a forfeit at 120 pounds and junior Keagan Albers dominated his match against David Prater, stringing together multiple takedowns and near falls in a 16-1 technical fall at 126 pounds. Senior Xavier Villalobos extended Rochelle’s lead over the PantherHawks, earning three takedowns and a fall against Kameron Rowe at 132 pounds.

Le-Win/Stockton clawed back into the match with victories at 138 pounds and 144 pounds, where Mauricio Glass recorded a fall over junior Deegan Schabacker and Arrison Bauer added a fall against sophomore Josh Lassiter. Junior Frank Nasca stopped the bleeding, compiling three takedowns and two near falls in a 17-0 technical fall over Tegan Arnold at 150 pounds.

Junior Brenden Voight followed with another technical fall for the Hubs, scoring five takedowns and one near fall in his 20-4 victory over Mark Detwiler at 157 pounds. Senior Grant Gensler held on for a 4-0 decision against John Mensendike, using a second-period escape and takedown to claim the win at 165 pounds. Trailing 30-12, Le-Win/Stockton picked up a win at 175 pounds, where Eli Larson notched a 15-0 technical fall over senior Matthew Lynn.

The PantherHawks then grabbed a key victory at 190 pounds, making the score 30-20 after Oliver McPeek’s 8-3 decision over junior Roman Villalobos. Senior Kaiden Morris sealed Rochelle’s win, however, totaling three takedowns in his 10-2 major decision over Jeremiah Luke at 215 pounds. Le-Win/Stockton’s Asher Acevedo claimed the win at 285 pounds, recording a second-period fall over sophomore Adam Cobos for the last PantherHawk victory.

The final two bouts of the dual went to the Hubs, who sent out freshman Jonathan Hernandez and junior Freddie Hernandez to receive forfeits at 106 pounds and 113 pounds.

Stillman Valley

Junior Keagan Albers took the first match of the dual against the Cardinals, scoring three near falls and one takedown during his 15-0 technical fall over Preston Ludens at 126 pounds. Senior Xavier Villalobos followed with a first-period fall over Guillermo Salas-Godinez at 132 pounds and junior Deegan Schabacker recorded a first-period fall over Brodie Watterson at 138 pounds.

Sophomore Josh Lassiter received a forfeit at 144 pounds and junior Frank Nasca kept the points coming for the Hubs, using a third-period reversal to earn a fall against Chase Jones at 150 pounds. Junior Brenden Voight secured Rochelle’s second technical fall of the match, compiling two takedowns and three near falls in a 18-2 win over Brady Hinkle at 157 pounds.

Seniors Grant Gensler and Matthew Lynn took forfeits at 165 pounds and 175 pounds to give the Hubs a 46-0 lead in the match. Junior Roman Villalobos turned a takedown into a first-period fall against Brady Stewart at 190 pounds. Senior Kaiden Morris and sophomore Adam Cobos claimed forfeits at 215 pounds and 285 pounds to put Rochelle ahead of the Cardinals 64-0.

Stillman Valley’s Michael Pannarele took a forfeit at 106 pounds. Rochelle closed the match with victories at 113 pounds and 120 pounds, where junior Freddie Hernandez turned in a 9-0 major decision over Xander Bell and freshman Aidan Lopez won by fall over Wade Reiniche.
