Wrestling: Hubs knock off Kaneland in Interstate 8 opener

Rochelle reaches 3-1 record with 44-24 victory against Knights

MAPLE PARK — The Rochelle Hub varsitty wrestling team battled Kaneland on the road Thursday, winning 44-24 and improving to 3-1 on the season. Junior Jorge Driggs opened the dual with a victory for Rochelle, scoring an 11-8 decision over JR Warfel in the 285-pound bout.

Kaneland’s Cameron Phillips won by fall in the 106-pound bout before Hub freshman Xavier Villalobos held off Kamron Scholl for a 4-0 decision in the 113-pound bout. Freshman Joseph Nadig extended Rochelle’s lead in the 120-pound bout, pinning Will Lindgren in the first period to put the Hubs ahead 12-6.

Juniors Weldon Nay and Wesley Brown followed with decisions in the 126-pound and 132-pound bouts, with Nay beating Ryan Ortega 12-5 and Brown defeating Aaron Eastman 10-4. Sophomore Alex Burke won by fall over Dean Baldridge in the 138-pound bout to give Rochelle a 24-6 advantage.

Freshman Grant Gensler earned a 9-1 major decision over Cole Olsen in the 145-pound bout before senior Caleb Nadig pinned Ade Sanni to win the 152-pound bout. Kaneland’s Christian Duffing pinned to win the 160-pound bout. Leading 34-12, Rochelle surged ahead after sophomore Brock Metzger defeated Nate Harper with a 13-1 major decision in the 170-pound bout.

The Knights pinned to win the 182-pound and 195-pound bouts before Hub freshman Kaiden Morris won by injury default in the 220-pound bout to seal the Rochelle dual victory.
