Rochelle remains unbeaten after 61-16 victory over Knights

MAPLE PARK — The Rochelle Hubs continued their early-season dominance during their Interstate 8 Conference opener against Kaneland on Thursday evening. Rochelle scored 28 straight points to start the dual and won five matches by fall to beat the Knights 61-16. 

The Hubs (7-0, 1-0 Interstate 8) will look to remain unbeaten when they travel south for the Washington Duals on Friday evening. Rochelle took three straight forfeits to open the dual match against the Knights, with freshmen Jonathan Hernandez and AJ Milan receiving wins at 106 pounds and 113 pounds and junior Freddie Hernandez taking a forfeit at 120 pounds.

Senior Xavier Villalobos was on and off the mat in a matter of seconds, using only 17 seconds to score a first-period takedown and fall over Camden Skipper at 126 pounds. Junior Keagan Albers put the Hubs ahead 28-0 with a strong performance against John Havron, building a 10-1 lead in the first period and compiling four takedowns in a 20-10 major decision at 132 pounds.

Kaneland’s first win came at 138 pounds, where Alex Gochis strung together an 18-4 technical all over junior Deegan Schabacker. Junior Frank Nasca took a forfeit at 144 pounds, sparking a run of four straight wins for the Hubs, who took a 37-5 lead after sophomore Josh Lassiter recorded two third-period near falls in his 13-6 decision over Jack Gruber at 150 pounds. 

Junior Brenden Voight and senior Grant Gensler followed with back-to-back falls at 157 pounds and 165 pounds to extend Rochelle’s lead. Voight secured a fall over Kaneland’s Cooper Van Wagoner before Gensler used just 39 seconds to earn his fall over Caden Vanik. Junior Roman Villalobos kept the Hubs rolling with a first-period fall over Jack Parker at 190 pounds. 

Senior Kaiden Morris concluded the dual match with two takedowns and a first-period fall against JR Warfel at 285 pounds. Kaneland’s final two victories came at 175 pounds and 215 pounds, where Apollo Gochis scored a 15-0 technical fall over senior Matthew Lynn and Rogan O’Neill held on for a third-period fall over senior Matieyko Rodriguez at 215 pounds.
