Discolored water not cause for concern

Posted

ROCHELLE — Many residents in Rochelle saw discolored water — ranging from light brown to dark brown — when they turned on their taps this past weekend.

City officials released a statement Monday regarding the water discoloration many residents experienced on Saturday.

“The water is and has been safe to drink, as confirmed by the IEPA,” Jenny Thompson, marketing and PR manager for the City of Rochelle, said. “Manganese is a commonly used additive in public water systems and although the water may have a dark tint, residents may safely use the water for drinking, washing, etc.”

By mid-afternoon Saturday, crews with Rochelle Municipal Utilities identified and corrected the malfunction at the filter plant, which had caused the problem.

Residents are asked to call 815-562-4155 if their water still appears dark or discolored.
